Dante’s oaks – Dante 700 Special
This excursion to discover the pine forest of Classe, accompanied by an environmental guide who will help participants retrace the steps of the Supreme Poet, admire the landscapes told in the Divine Comedy until you reach the great oak grove.
The itinerary, which is both pedestrian and cycle path, is made in a ring and is about 3,800 m long. It starts from the Parco 1 ° Maggio and, after the Ponte Botole, goes into the heart of the pine forest. Along the way you will encounter large specimens of stone pine, dry areas rich in holm oaks and more humid areas where oak prevails. If you are lucky it is possible to see some of the animals that inhabit the pine forest, such as deer or squirrels.
Dante was perhaps inspired by the oaks of the Pineta di Classe describing “the divine thick and living forest”.
Dante Alighieri writes in Purgatory, Canto XXVIII vv. 19-21.
as it is gathered from branch to branch
through the pine forest up ‘lito di Chiassi,
when Aeolus scilocco melts away.
just as it happens from branch to branch
in the pine forest on the Lido di Classe,
when Aeolus melts the sirocco wind.
Path length: 3.8 km
