The Cattolica Aquarium: the underwater world
The Aquarium covers an area of 110,000 square metres overlooking the sea. The historic buildings, dating from the 1930s, have been refurbished to house thousands of living creatures in faithfully recreated habitats. Bring your family along to discover a huge variety of animal species! The themed tanks reproduce marine ecosystems from the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, coral reefs and freshwater streams, divided into four colourful themed routes.
Aquarium Tours:
Blue Entrance
A journey through the marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, and the Red Sea coral reef. The tanks reveal marine wonders, with ecosystems teeming with life and mystery.
Shark Tank:
Bull sharks and nurse sharks inhabit the large central tank, which holds 700,000 litres. As endangered species, these sharks are vulnerable to human impact.
Humboldt penguins:
They live along the coasts of Chile and Peru, form monogamous pairs and feed on molluscs and krill. They are friendly and sociable, and children will love them.
Clownfish:
They live in symbiosis with anemones, produce up to 200 eggs and are notable for their lively behaviour.
Yellow Entrance
Land-dwelling animals that depend on water – many of which are at risk of extinction – highlight environmental issues.
Eastern small-clawed otter:
Small and playful, it lives in freshwater marshes across Asia. A vulnerable species due to pollution and hunting.
Cuvier’s dwarf caiman:
It is one of the smallest alligators, measuring no more than 1.5 metres. The species has been protected since 1973.
Green Entrance
A journey through the world of reptiles and amphibians in carefully recreated habitats.
Snakes:
They comprise around 3,000 species, some of which are poisonous. These animals are also vital for medical research.
Amphibians:
Frogs, toads and newts live between water and land, but they are threatened by pollution and deforestation.
Chameleons:
Extraordinary reptiles that change colour to blend into their surroundings, with retractable tongues and independent eyes.
Purple Entrance
Abysses: Alien Land
Discover the creatures of the deep, where sunlight does not penetrate beyond 200 metres. An exhibition organised by Naturaliter, featuring incredible animals such as the 13-metre-long giant squid.
