Cervia by bike

FOR CYCLING AND NATURE LOVERS

WALKING TRAILS IN CERVIA, SUITABLE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY, SET AMIDST COOL PINE FORESTS AND NATURE RESERVES

Cervia is best explored by bike: it’s completely flat, with a lovely seafront, plenty of tree-lined avenues and lush pine forests. It offers a wealth of routes through the town and the countryside, just a stone’s throw from the sea.

Proof of this can be found in the 40 km of cycle paths and the various routes through the pine forest and the salt marshes.

As you cycle, you’ll discover natural areas, historic sites of great beauty and local specialities. Or you can train on the routes of Ironman, making use of a network of quiet back roads, in an area that offers varied terrain and a mild climate, making it possible to go cycle touring all year round.

Leaving the car behind is very easy! You can even bring the whole family – the roads are all on flat ground and the numerous trails are well-maintained and regularly checked.

Would you like an example?

From the centre of Cervia or Milano Marittima, through the pine forest, you can reach the Ortazzo Valley, where you’ll find the Duna Costiera Nature Reserve and the mouth of the Bevano stream. The area is divided into two parts: the Ortazzo Valley is a vast freshwater marsh that is permanently flooded, whilst the Ortazzino wetland is a brackish area adjacent to the beach, featuring a mix of ponds, reed beds, dunes with Mediterranean vegetation and coastal pine forests.

The route to the Ortazzo Valley forms part of a longer route that extends as far as the city of Ravenna; it follows almost exclusively dirt tracks and footpaths, covering approximately 15 km each way. The terrain is flat, presents no technical difficulties and is of great natural interest: once you reach the valley, a viewing tower allows you to observe coots, swans, ducks, herons and cormorants.

Another of the most picturesque routes winding through the Po Delta is La Rotta del Sale, a cycle path that runs parallel to the ancient maritime route once followed by the ships carrying salt from Cervia to the port of the Serenissima, a route starting from the city centre that passes through natural landscapes of great beauty, eventually reaching – if completed in its entirety – the Lido of Venice. The first section, about 20 km long, is pleasant and shaded and leads to Ravenna through the pine forests of Cervia and Classe.

“CERVIA BY BIKE” USEFUL TIPS FOR ENJOYING CYCLING AND THE ROAD SAFELY

But “living by bike” also means using it properly and with respect for nature, the local area and other people. As a means of transport, cycling is not only good for the environment and our health, but also offers a useful solution to urban mobility and helps to ease traffic congestion.

For this reason, the council will shortly be launching an awareness campaign on the correct use of bicycles, aimed at residents, tourists and schools as soon as they reopen. A leaflet entitled ’Cervia by bike“ has been produced; it is a brief guide listing the main rules and regulations set out in the Highway Code that must be observed, as well as useful advice on how to cycle and use the roads safely. The leaflet also contains a map of all the cycle paths in the Cervia area, showing which ones are already open and which are planned for the future.

Mayor Massimo Medri said:<<CerviThe city has always been committed to protecting the local environment and focused on sustainable development, with a view to promoting a good quality of life. Cycling for sport, leisure and as a means of transport is part of a choice that benefits both the environment and health, but it also offers a useful solution to urban mobility, traffic congestion and economic challenges. ‘Cervia by Bike’ is a brief guide to cycling in a safe and considerate manner, respecting both the environment and other people.

Cervia boasts some 40 km of existing cycle paths. We invite all residents and tourists to explore them, so that they can appreciate our local area even more. As Sergio Zavoli wrote: “Cycling is a way of bringing life into harmony with time and space; it is about moving and being within still-human proportions”. A bike ride clears the mind and is an immersion in beauty. Special thanks go to Cervia Turismo and Destinazione Romagna, who are committed to promoting and enhancing the bike>> project.
