The Parish Church of St Stephen
Pieve di Santo Stefano, Pisignano
The Pieve di Santo Stefano is situated in Pisignano, in the countryside around Cervia, about 9 km from the town centre. It is one of the oldest churches in the province of Ravenna, with the earliest document mentioning it dating back to 977 AD, although an even earlier origin cannot be ruled out. Set amidst countryside planted with vines and fruit trees, the parish church stands out for its imposing façade in the style of early medieval basilicas, representing a significant example of the architecture of that period.
The Road Cross
Near the entrance, a Roman milestone can be seen, bearing witness to the existence of an inhabited settlement and the passage of an important road in Roman times. Set into the outer wall of the church is a fragment of a "Croce Viaria", featuring a blessing hand – a medieval symbol that indicated to pilgrims the proximity of a pilgrims’ hostel.
In 1512, the parish church was almost completely destroyed, only to be rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1527, as recorded on the plaques on the façade and in the apse. The 20th-century restoration work has restored a simple interior, ideal for creating an atmosphere of contemplation and tranquillity.
The Apse
Inside, there are works of considerable interest:
- Apse triptych (16th century): In the centre is depicted the Madonna Enthroned with the Child, flanked by Saint Stephen the Protomartyr and Saint Lucy, patron saint of the nuns of Venice. At the bottom is a benefactor of the church shown in prayer. In the apse, against a backdrop of a starry sky, the Eternal Father is depicted surrounded by adoring angels.
- Altarpiece in the right-hand aisle: depicts Saints Magdalene, Onofrio and Otmaro.
- Fresco in the left-hand aisle: Recently restored, it depicts Saint Andrew the Apostle and another saint, probably an abbot, recognisable by his crozier.
